Project Black - Vegetation

I am happy to share with you my contribution to "Project Black", a project at Fishlabs that unfortunately was canceled. Together with an experienced, talented and passionate team, we poured our heart into this and I hope you will like it!

I joint the team as a senior 3d environment artist few month into concept phase and was involved in finding solutions for the realization of the desired art style and worked on establishing workflows for the creation of vegetation and organic elements.

Imagine working on a game with a lush, colorful, dense jungle forest on an alien planet in a sort of painterly style with countless mysteries and danger lurking in every corner - doesn't that sound super cool? Well, I loved it and I had to figuring out how we were going to create all the trees and large alien plants for it.
First the plan was to create all the trees with just Speedtree, but with the specific art style we quickly realized that we couldn't avoid at least giving the tree trunks and roots a sculpting pass.
Speedtree was still regularly used to combine even vegetation where each element was custom created and to utilize the power of the software to easily and non-destructively deform the elements with parameters.
Since we still were early in the concept phase as Unreal Engine 5.1 was released, which introduced Nanite for Foliage, we decided to rebuild the vegetation we already had and use full geometry foliage instead of the traditional way with alpha cutouts.

Needless to say, it was a team effort and I'm really proud of what we achieved together.
Sadly, we won't get the chance to make a real game out of it.
